The Big Question Of Potential

It's fair to say we would all like to be with someone who has potential. Well, the good news is that we all have potential. The bad news is we all have the potential to act both positively and negatively in any situation. The only way to make sure we are more positive than negative is to constantly work at it, to literally fulfill our potential .. but we don’t all do that, do we.

One way to find out whether someone is actually fulfilling their positive potential is simply to get to know them - which is what happens when we go on dates and develop relationships. Over time we get to see all their 'positive' and 'negative' traits and usually make a judgment based on them. When the positives outweigh the negatives, the relationship generally survives, but when its the other way round there is little prospect of a rosy future.

Of course, it would have been useful and saved us a lot of time and bother if we could have known all about that person’s various traits in advance, so at least we knew what to look out for. Forewarned is definitely forearmed! But unfortunately we tend not to reveal our true selves to complete strangers .. heaven forbid, we might frighten them away!

So wouldn’t it be helpful if, before we started dating someone, we already knew exactly what potential that person had? If we could look at an objective summary of all the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characteristics that make up that person and get a clear picture of who they could be? 

And wouldn’t it be even better if we could metaphorically look down on that person and see all the different aspects of their personality laid out before us and know which ones they were most likely to portray often and which ones would only show up every once in a while?

And since we’re looking for miracles, wouldn’t it be absolutely fabulous if we could go on an imaginary date with them, without spending any time or money or having to get all dressed up, and find out how it would likely take shape if we were going out with them in the flesh?
